A Visit to Burgermeister: Would You Eat From an Old Converted Toilet?

August 25, 2019 by Claire Filed Under: Europe, Food, Food & Drink, Germany Leave a Comment

An old converted public toilet turned into a burger kiosk. Are you brave enough to try it? Burgermeister - Berlin, Germany

Would you eat a burger from a toilet? I bet you’ve never been asked that before! What if I told you it was the best burger in Berlin? Would you be tempted? I was!

If you’re a follower of my blog you know that I have a little obsession with toilets (trust me I know how weird that sounds!) But ever since I did the London Loo tour I love finding either places that have cool toilets, or places that used to be toilets that have become something else. So when I was researching Berlin and came across Burgermeister I knew I had to go there!

Introducing Burgermeister

The popular outdoor kiosk doesn’t hide the fact it used to be a public toilet, it embraces it which is one of the reasons I love it so much. Located under the U-Bahn station Schlesisches Tor, this small burger place gets very busy. We were shocked when we arrived and saw a massive queue. It was 3pm! What on earth were the queues like at 1pm?!

We decided it would be worth the wait so we got in line for something, hopefully, pretty special. If it’s this busy it must be good right? And surely the queue, while big, wouldn’t take too long. Ok, so we were wrong about that and my friend who was starving wasn’t happy about having to wait so long. Especially when we realised you had to queue to order and then queue again to receive your burger. In the end, it took us about an hour to get some food.

One bad thing about this place is that they only have one menu pinned to the wall that you can’t actually see from the back of the queue. No big deal really, it just means you can’t decide what to order while you wait so you have to get quite close before you can read it. But for a small venue they do have a decent size menu. I think there were 7 burgers in total to choose from. I went for a mushroom, cheese and bacon burger while Ollie went for a chilli burger.

Getting Our Burgers

After we had ordered we got that excited feeling because it was almost time to try this burger and see what all the fuss was about. We had been given numbers so we knew when it was our turn to collect our food from the other side of the kiosk. While you’re waiting, you can see inside and watch them cook the food. They were so efficient and the kitchen was so clean. There really is no need to worry about the fact that it was once a toilet!

Once you get the food you then have to try and find somewhere to eat it. While there is a seating area it’s not very big. What I did love about it though was the fact that they had made the seating area out of an old bike rack. It’s just another way of acknowledging that this was once just a public toilet and that really is the charm of this place.

Overall Verdict of Burgermeister

So was it worth the wait? Hell yeah it was! It was definitely the best burger I’ve had in Germany, let alone Berlin! The burger patty was juicy and delicious and the topping combination was spot on. I wouldn’t just queue again for that burger, I’d even travel to Berlin just to enjoy it again. I’m jealous of the locals who get to enjoy it on a regular basis.

As you can see I loved my toilet burger. You may go there for the quirkiness, but it’s the quality that keeps people coming back. Is there anything to complain about? Well, they did forget Ollie’s burger but because of the numbering system we could tell straight away and they were quick to make his so I personally wouldn’t complain about it.

Where’s the weirdest place you’ve ever had a burger? Would you be brave enough to try Burgermeister?
