It’s that time of the month again when I look back at the previous month and see what the beer highlights have been. Ok, I’m a little late this month. With my four week trip across the United States, I’ve been a little preoccupied. But those four weeks gave me a great chance to explore some great new beers!
October started with me at home sampling many incredible beers from the UK and Europe. Then I headed to the States where I sampled some local beers from New York City, Chicago, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Fort Lauderdale before the month ended in Las Vegas.

October 2022 Beers: Stats

Breweries | 81 |

Total Beers
I know what you’re thinking, this month the total is a lot higher. I’ll admit I was a little taken aback when I saw the total. I knew I’d had more than usual but I wasn’t expecting it to be that much!
My beer consumption is always higher when I travel as I’m off exploring a new beer scene. In the US it was easy to sample many beers as most breweries and taprooms I visited offered flights. Small 4oz or 5oz glasses that I shared so the total sounds worse than it is!

The Countries
My October 2022 beers came from a total of 12 countries. More than I expected as I knew I would be mostly having US beers. But I guess I did have a couple of weeks at home before I left for the US trip.
That being said, I’m sure the fact that the majority of my October 2022 beers came from US breweries will surprise no-one. What did surprise me though was Italy being second on the list this month. But then one of the beers I had was a collaboration beer between 5 Italian breweries!

The Breweries
My October 2022 beers came from a total of 81 breweries. Considering the increase in the total of beers enjoyed, the brewery count didn’t go up that much compared to other months. This is largely due to the flights. Knowing I may never have a beer from that brewery again, I wanted to enjoy a selection of their beers.
As you’ll see from the list, the breweries at the top are all from the US. They are all breweries I was able to visit a taproom for. As you can see I had the most flights while at Invasive Species Brewing which is why they made the top of the list.

This trip also taught me not to be too judgemental on breweries. At home in England we get a Goose Island Beer Co. IPA on tap in a lot of places. It’s a beer you see often in a pub that offers common craft beers. It’s a good beer to choose from a limited menu but not one you tend to seek out. That’s why I was surprised when Chicago loving beer enthusiast Lexx encouraged a visit to their taproom. Having preconceived expectations of their beers (based on the one I had drunk at home) I never would have actively seeked them out. Well, I was wrong! They make some incredible beers and now I’m jealous that we don’t get all of them in England.

One more brewery that deserves a shout out is third place on the list, Other Half Brewing Co. I wasn’t supposed to be in New York until the end of the trip so having a bonus day at the start of the trip meant being able to visit one of their NYC taprooms before the official visit to the city when I went over to Brooklyn to go to the taproom in their brewery. That part of the trip happened in November which means their beer count has been split into two roundup posts. If that wasn’t the case they would definitely be top of the list.

Styles
If you’ve read the other beer roundup posts hopefully you won’t be surprised that there are so many beer styles available. As always I will be using the style selected by Untappd.
My October 2022 beers were a combination of 67 styles. I was expecting the number to be higher as I obviously had more beers last month but I wasn’t expecting it to be this high! But then again with the flights I was able to select a good combination of styles each time. As the drinks were smaller I also tried out more beers I would usually avoid which added to the style count.

Looking at the list it doesn’t surprise me that I had several American styled beers as most of these were American beers! Being fall there were a lot more Octoberfest beers and pumpkin beers available than usual.

My Favourite Beers
I got to sample so many beers last month so I’m excited to look back at my favourites. That’s the great thing about flights, you get to try about 4 or 5 beers instead of just having 1 pint.
As always, I’ll be using my Untappd ratings to select October’s favourite beers. All these beers were given a score of 4.00 or higher. And for the first time since starting this series started I have some beers that scored 4.50.
4.50 – Goose Island Beer Co – Bourbon Country Brand Stout (2016)
Taking advantage of being able to try some of the 2016 version of this delicious stout before it disappears. Lovely, thick and smoky with flavours of oak, chocolate and vanilla

4.50 – Other Half Brewing Co & Phase Three Brewing – All Pixel Everything
This is a great double dry hopped IPA with a nice fruity, tropical taste to it. One where you can definitely taste the booze!
4.25 – Neon Raptor & Adroit Theory – Bear With Me
A nice thick, boozy stout with a taste of dark chocolate and a faint hint of coconut that just seems to get better and better as you drink it.
4.25 – Orchestrated Minds Brewing – Heres Ya Pumpkin
I wouldn’t have thought of a stout when thinking about pumpkin flavoured beer but there’s a weird in a good way taste to this stout. With hints of pumpkin, salted caramel and marshmallow this is a nice fall inspired beer.

4.25 – Other Half Brewing Co – Double Dry Hopped All Galaxy Everything
A nice smooth drink for a DIPA. It’s citrusy and tropical in taste with a dry finish that drinks nicely.
4.25 – Other Half Brewing Co – Double Dry Hopped Cabbage
Tropical and fruity in flavour, this tasty double dry hopped IPA is smooth and easy to drink.
4.25 – Other Half Brewing Co – Triple Mosaic Dream
This is a lovely smooth beer for a TIPA that’s juicy, hoppy and just well balanced, not too sweet and delicate in taste.

4.00 – Basqueland Brewing & The Eighth State Brewing Company – Time Stretch
Surprisingly quite a mild tasting beer for a 12 percenter! This deliciously creamy stout has hints of vanilla and cocoa.
4.00 – Butcher and the Brewer – Albino Stout
An aptly named beer for a white stout. It may not look like a stout but still has that lovely sweet taste of a stout with hints of coffee.
4.00 – Funky Buddha Brewery – Void Shaker Barrel-Aged Stout
This bourbon barrel-aged imperial stout is a limited edition so I was happy to get a taste on my trip. Roasty in flavour with hints of vanilla it’s a very good stout.

4.00 – Goose Island Beer Co – Small Batch #8
Goose Island use the Small Batch series to showcase their skills creating beers from the barrels used in a variety of styles. This batch is a Quad Ale and brewed in American rum barrels for 9 months. You can definitely taste the rum in this one!
4.00 – Invasive Species Brewing – Casual Friday
Perfectly named, this thin and hazy IPA is subtle in taste making it a great casual Friday drink.
4.00 – Invasive Species Brewing – Lizard King
This delicious double dry hopped hazy IPA is super smooth and juicy in taste with hints of citrus.
4.00 – Orchestrated Minds Brewing – Ocean Beach
A drinkable, light and mild west coast ale with a nice crisp, hoppy flavour.

4.00 – Other Half Brewing Co – DDH Oyster: Oysters Wars Edition
This DDH pale ale is crisp, light and hoppy. A smooth and juicy beer that goes down easily.
4.00 – Rhinegeist Brewery – Mushushshu
Pronounced moo-shoe-shoe, this dark ale is created in bourbon barrels. Smooth and sweet with a hint of coffee, it’s a delicious brew.
4.00 – Toppling Goliath Brewing Co – Pompeii
A refreshingly light and smooth IPA that’s hoppy in taste with just a hint of tropical fruit.

Beers Worth Mentioning
Just because a beer didn’t make the top scores, doesn’t mean it’s not worthy of being mentioned. With the extra beers drunk last month this list is a little bigger than usual but there were so many good beers enjoyed that just missed out on the top scores. What’s amazing is that a sour has actually made this list.
